Research

The group works across the science and technology of graphene and other two-dimensional materials. Each theme is illustrated with a figure from one of the group's recent papers.

  1. Graphene–polymer composites and coatings

Graphene oxide and graphene nanoplatelets as reinforcing fillers in water-based elastomers, polyurethane coatings and layered nanocomposites, with the focus on the filler–polymer interface and on materials that can be made at scale.

  2. Graphene for water purification

Graphene oxide adsorbents and graphene-filled membranes that remove dyes, salts and other pollutants from water, designed for high capacity and for reuse over many cycles.

    6 publications

  3. Graphene oxide dispersions and liquid crystals

How graphene oxide flakes behave and assemble in water, from liquid-crystal phases and flow instabilities to droplets that self-assemble into shaped hydrogel and aerogel particles.

    7 publications

  4. Graphene MEMS, sensors and devices

Ultra-thin graphene–polymer membranes for pressure sensors and other micro- and nano-electromechanical devices, their mechanics and modelling, and fabrication routes compatible with standard MEMS processes.

    8 publications

  5. Graphene biointerfaces and biomedical materials

How proteins, cells and tissues interact with graphene and graphene oxide, applied to cell arrays, regenerative hydrogels, nerve repair and low-cost biosensors.
