Nanocarbon assembly and spectroscopy

Placing and probing individual graphene flakes and carbon nanotubes, from dielectrophoretic device assembly and voltage-contrast electron microscopy to nanoscale infrared and plasmon-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

Atomic force microscope and infrared maps of a single reduced graphene oxide flake functionalised with sulfonated pyrenes, and line profiles comparing flake height with infrared absorption across its edge.

Much of the group’s foundational work concerns individual nanocarbons. AFM-coupled infrared spectroscopy identified and mapped sulfonate groups on a 1.7 nm functionalised monolayer of reduced graphene oxide with 32 nm resolution; the group runs a nanoscale infrared facility for this kind of measurement.

Earlier work assembled carbon-nanotube and graphene device arrays by dielectrophoresis, imaged their electronic structure by voltage-contrast scanning electron microscopy, and, with collaborators, used plasmon-enhanced Raman scattering to probe strain, doping and molecules inside nanotubes.
